I have enjoyed being a featured performer with many great orchestras around the world but I haven’t been a featured soloist since age 17. History is about to repeat itself this coming Saturday, October 19th at 8:00 PM when I perform Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra by the French composer Darius Milhaud. The performance is at SUNY Ulster Community College in Stone Ridge, NY with the Esopus Chamber Orchestra, a fantastic up and coming professional ensemble in our region, led by the brilliant young conductor / violinist, Nadège Foofat. Milhaud wrote this little gem in 1929 making it one of the earliest percussion works in western classical music. Milhaud influenced many great musicians including his students at Mills College: Steve Reich, Joan Tower, Philip Glass, Peter Schickele and Dave Brubeck, to name a few. Please spread the word as I need witnesses. At this rate, the next time I’ll play this work, I’ll be 111 years old.
